From Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

If you arrive at Schiphol Airport you can either take a taxi or take the train:

Taxi will cost anywhere between €65 and €85 (prices vary from service to service and these are approximate prices). You can book a taxi from the Schiphol Travel Taxi service. On their website please enter "2628CC" as Zipcode and "5" as House Number.

Train will cost €8.20 or €13.40 for a one-way ticket, depending whether you travel first or second class. From midnight until 6.40am the train runs every hour on the hour. From then on there is a train every 15 minutes, either via Hollands Spoor station in The Hague or via Rotterdam Central Station. From 22.30 till midnight there is a train every half hour. Also see the website of the NS.

From Rotterdam Airport

A taxi from the Rotterdam Airport to Delft will cost around €25.00. The telephone number to call a taxi is +31 (0)10-26 20 406. If you prefer to travel to Delft by public transport, you will first need to take bus nr. 33 to Rotterdam Central Station. The journey from the airport will take about 20 minutes. From the Rotterdam railway station you can take a train to Delft; they run every 15 minutes. See also the website of the RET (in Dutch) and the NS.

Getting around Delft and to the University by public transport

To find your way around Delft, first go to the Connexxion information stand at Delft railway station to get timetable information and buy a so-called strippenkaart. The number of strips you need depends on the distance you travel. To get from the centre of Delft to the university auditorium (aula) by bus will cost you two strips, the minimum, which covers one zone. On the bus you can buy a ticket of 2, 3 or 8 strips. A 15-strip ticket, which is cheaper in relative terms, may be bought at the information stand or at certain shops. The same ticket may be used for more than one person. It is valid for one year. From the city centre, bus nr. 63, 69 or 129 will take you to the University.

Coming to Delft by private car or motorbike

If you plan to come to Delft by car or motorbike we advise you to have a look at a website such as Mappy to help you plan your route. If you use Google Earth, then you can download this placement file.

Parking in Delft

Visitors are advised to use the official car parks, such as the one in Phoenixstraat. There are several at only a few minutes' walk from the central shopping area. There are almost 1000 spaces in total; just follow the signs to P-route Centrum. For €1.30 per hour or €7.00 per day you can leave your car as long as you like. The parking fee has to be paid when you come to collect your car. The parking spaces in the streets of Delft are clearly marked. Find a parking metre and get a ticket after parking your car. Currently, the rate is €1.50 or €2.00 per hour. There is no maximum daily rate. However, the cheapest option is to park your car in the University area. You might have to search for a space, but since the University is outside the city centre, there is no parking charge.

Delft is an interesting and historic town located in the province of South Holland between the larger cities of The Hague and Rotterdam, the former being the seat of Dutch government and the latter, with its Europoort, the largest sea terminal in the world.

Delft is nicknamed ‘de Prinsenstad’ (the Princes’ City), because William of Orange, the first in the Dutch royal line, held court in Delft in the 16th century. Other famous historical figures who once lived and worked in Delft are the painter Johannes Vermeer and the inventor of the microscope, Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek. If one looks at the ancient canals lined with merchant’s houses, the old churches and the splendid town hall one sees that Delft’s rich history is still very much alive. At the same time, though, it remains a very modern and vibrant city. Ten percent of its 100,000 inhabitants are students and the university has attracted a large number of technology-oriented companies.

In Greek mythology Prometheus, whose torch forms the TU Delft logo, was a titan who defied Zeus, the supreme god, to steal fire from Olympus and give it to mankind. It was an act that marked the beginning of man’s technological development.

In the spirit of Prometheus, TU Delft is an entrepreneurial university at the forefront of technological development. As such it is perpetually involved in furthering technological advancement in the interests of society. By means of its fundamental and applied research and educational programmes, TU Delft trains the engineers of tomorrow.

Established on 8th January 1842 by King Willem II, TU Delft has a rich tradition reaching back more than 160 years. Initially the university focused predominantly on civil engineering but gradually more and more engineering disciplines have appeared on the academic programme. Today TU Delft has eight faculties and it currently offers fifteen BSc and twenty-nine MSc programmes. With approximately 13,000 students and an academic staff of 2,100 (including 200 professors), TU Delft is the largest and most comprehensive university of engineering sciences in the Netherlands.

Abstract: The last eight years have seen huge progress in sensornet technologies: small computers and sensors costing tens of dollars, tiny operating systems running in hundreds of bytes of memory, short-range radios consuming minimal power, and multi-hop networks covering local areas. As sensornet research continues, one tend is "bigger": more powerful computers and sensors, higher-level operating systems services, mixes of radio technologies, and wide-area networks connecting sensornets in global deployments. This talk will look at these trends in new applications, and explore what principles from small sensornets carry on.

Title: "Mathematical Modeling of Data-Centric Querying
in Wireless Sensor Networks"

Speaker: Bhaskar Krishnamachari (USC, USA)

Abstract: The central paradigm of data-centric networking in wireless sensor networks allows for in-network storage of named events and their retrieval through on-demand queries. Much of the activity in querying protocol design and evaluation for sensor networks has focused on a design-by-intuition/validate-by-simulation approach. However, particularly given the scarce resources and need for efficient operation, it is important to also develop complementary mathematical models that can provide quantitative insights into design tradeoffs, parameter optimization, protocol selection, and scalable operation.

A key aim of this tutorial is to show how to develop simple first-order mathematical models of querying mechanisms in order to characterize their performance in a general manner with respect to various design and application parameters.

We begin with a high-level discussion of the art of first-order mathematical modeling, emphasizing the importance of simplicity and identifying the key ingredients. We also discuss how such a mathematical modeling approach plays a complementary role to simulations and experimental evaluations.

Then, we provide an organized taxonomy and survey of various data-centric storage and querying techniques for sensor networks, and identify the kinds of questions that modeling these techniques can help answer.

We then present four concrete case studies demonstrating the modeling of querying protocols. The first two pertain to unstructured querying. We first examine optimal content replication for expanding ring-based queries. We then examine how random-walk based queries can be enhanced significantly in heterogeneous networks. The third case study pertains to a comparison of two hybrid push-pull mechanisms for structured querying --- hash-based data-centric storage and the combs-and-needles approach --- with and without aggregation, for ALL and ANY query types. Finally, we present an interesting analysis that reveals fundamental scaling laws for both unstructured and structured querying mechanisms. This analysis shows that there are limiting query and event growth conditions beyond which data-centric storage and querying cannot be sustained in arbitrarily large sensor networks.

Audience: The tutorial is aimed at researchers in academia and industry that are interested in developing first-order mathematical modeling skills to complement protocol design, simulation, and experimental implementation efforts. Advanced high school or first-year undergraduate mathematics will suffice to understand the mathematical content of this tutorial, as all topics will be treated in a self-contained manner. In particular, it should be
accessible to all graduate students in computer science and electrical engineering.

Speaker: Jan Beutel (ETH Zurich, Switzerland)

Abstract: The tutorial consists of an introductory part where we introduce basic
concepts of embedded wireless sensor network platforms (mote class devices)
as well as a hand-on section. The introduction will give a brief overview of
the BTnode platform, it's hardware architecture, the BTnut system software
as well as Bluetooth networking. We will then proceed to the practical part
where you get to know the development tools and first hands-on experience by
downloading a demo application onto a BTnode and connecting to other
Bluetooth devices. We will then coach you through the creation of a simple
multihop sensor data gathering application based on Bluetooth Scatternets.
The tutorial will conclude by demonstrating and experimenting with different
methods of profiling and debugging of sensor network applications.

Audience: People interested in learning about "real" sensor network
implementations, their challenges and caveats. This tutorial does not
require prior experience in embedded programming and thus is suitable for
researchers from all areas, e.g. people that have not yet had (extensive)
platform experience.

Requirements: Basic computer skills, familiarity with a build system (make).
We suggest that participants work in pairs of two but individual work is
also possible. Everyone should bring a Windows laptop with root/admin
access, if possible. You will be required to install the WinAVR tool package
on your laptop. Documentation for self-study is available on
http://www.btnode.ethz.ch

Abstract: Embedding millions of sensors into an environment creates a digital
skin or wireless network of sensors, each sensor capable of capturing
physical information about its immediate space. The past several years
of wireless sensor network research have resulted in advancements in
many areas. The generality and potential of this will be investigated in
various application domains, which span the land, the sea, and also the
air. This talk will highlight some of the challenges as we are advancing
this technology from academic prototypes to broad commercial usage.
