The benefits of the Internet and communication technologies are limited to a fraction of the world's population. For example, according to the Internet World Stats 2007, Internet penetration in North America is 69.7% of population compared to 3.6% for Africa and 10.7% for Asia. Cost factors, low literacy, and limited access to power and bandwidth in developing regions seem to suggest that there is a need for communication technology research specifically aimed to meet the special needs of developing regions.

Although the diverse challenges of developing regions along economic, social, political, and educational dimensions necessarily call for a multi-disciplinary approach, the focus of NSDR is on the technical side of communication and networking research for developing regions (e.g., communication infrastructure in rural areas, systems build using such infrastructure that solve some specific problem). We encourage submission of position papers or the results of preliminary work describing interesting, original, previously unpublished ideas pertaining to networked systems for developing regions, which ...
  • propose new research directions,
  • target a specific application,
  • have the potential to significantly enhance the design and sustainable deployment of networked systems in developing regions, or
  • would generate lively debate at the workshop.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Delay Tolerant Networking: delay-tolerant Internet access in developing regions, DTN routing over wireless rural links
  • Rural wireless: long-distance 802.11, WiMaX solutions, directional antennas, designed for low-income rural areas or urban areas
  • Sensor networks: sensor-net systems designed specifically for developing regions
  • Low-cost networking: devices, architectures, or systems which allow communication and networking at low cost
  • Power-efficient systems: power-efficient computing architectures, power-efficient network infrastructure, power-efficient mobile systems
  • Applications of networking in healthcare, agriculture, disaster management, education, etc.
